What Are Time Series DBs?

TSDBs Optimize the Handling of Timed Data

Time series databases (TSDBs) are not new.  However, the fundamental conditions of computing have changed over the last decade. Everything has become compartmentalized. Mainframes are gone, replaced by serverless servers, microservers, and containers.

Today, everything is a component. Everything has, or will have, a sensor … cars, factories, grids, phones, human bodies … all emitting a relentless stream of time series data.

This means that the underlying platforms need to evolve to support these new workloads — more data points, more data sources, more monitoring, more data aging, more controls.

Here is our monthly curated list of thought-provoking articles, blog posts, and videos on TSDBs:

How to Select the Right Database for Time-Series Data

By Jane Fine

Time-series databases (TSDBs) are the fastest growing database category today. With the explosive growth of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, storing and analyzing time-series data in an efficient manner is now more critical than ever.

This article discusses how to find the right TSDB to maximize the value of time-series data without requiring excessive time to integrate data stores or managing the database.

Influx vs Prometheus vs Timescale

By Gabriel Zimmermann

This video covers time series databases (TSDBs) and metric collection.  It includes a quick introduction to Influx. Prometheus, Timescale, and Telegraf, a comparison of different approaches, and what you can expect from each one.

Amazon Timestream

By AWS

Amazon Timestream is a fast, scalable, and serverless time series database service for IoT and operational applications that makes it easy to store and analyze trillions of events per day up to 1,000 times faster and at as little as 1/10th the cost of relational databases.

Here you will find frameworks and ideas to save time and cost in managing the lifecycle of time series data.  Things like keeping recent data in memory and moving historical data to a cost optimized storage tier based upon user defined policies.
